Well, you get a notification when you have a new pm - it is shown above between forum and the logout button. And you have buttons for your discussions, recent discussions and it is shown where something new was postet when you are in the categories of the forum. What else do you need?

Notifications on PM are already here. Check you box, there's a settings icon. There you can choose which notification you want.
For the forum it didn't setup any so far.
For me it is enough in the forum to see, where there are new posts with the 'new' sign. but I miss something like this in the critique section, you always have to skip through the pics to see, if someone added a comment. Also I would like notification, if someone posted a commend about a pic of mine (either in my account or in the critique section) - I think it is not practical to check your own pics every once in a while to see, if something happend. Especially if they become more.
