Beauty of decay is a special photo community dedicated to all who are addicted to urban exploration AND art. We wanted to create a place where it's not the location itself standing in the main focus but outstanding pictures.
With the motto "less is more" we want to appoint a high level of quality so the publishing process is moderated to ensure this. Every picture placed here will first go through a screening process where it will be evaluated by the members and the crew. For details about this process please read our FAQ below.

About the project:
Who is Beauty of decay?
It is founded by people having urban exploration as a real passion. They are addicted to lost places as well as they are to art and photography and who are disappointed about the usual places.
Why has Beauty of decay been founded?
We wanted to create a place where lost places are shown the way they deserve. We want to show the decayed beauty they own in full glamour and tell their stories.
Often in urban exploration the focus is only on the location and the quality and especialness of the pictures is not important. We think another way, we don't want fights about locations here, we only want to enjoy great and extraordinary captures.
Why is this place moderated?
We demand a high quality for our published pictures, to ensure this the only chance was to implement the screening process so only really great picturea will get published. It is a difficult point to judge over good and bad, therefore we decided to go for a voting by the members but also a discussion withing a selected jury. The result is a gallery of real upper class pictures.
Who is Beauty of Decay targeted at?
For our viewers it is for everyone who likes abandoned places and photography, we assure to show you a unique collection of art, of extraordinary places and pictures.
For our members it is for everyone who also has the feeling the world needs a place where extraordinary urbex photographs are respected and loved. It is for people who like to take part of a special art project and join a community of like-minded people exchanging about their view, their visions and their thoughts.
Membership and Screening
Why become a member?
Registering as a member brings you several efforts. First of all you can take part in the project and publishing pictures, but you will also get access to our forums and critics section where you can exchange with like-minded people.
What are the different memberships?
There are several types of membership - each with a different number of uploads per week and privileges:
- Basic Membership: 1 picture upload slot per week
- Bronze Membership: 2 picture upload slot per week
- Silver Membership: 3 picture upload slot per week
- Gold Membership: 5 picture upload slot per week
- Platinum Membership: Unlimited upload slots
At the moment only the Registered status is available to the community members. We are discussing on how to allow privileges to the upper levels of this site. Newly registered users are, when their registration has been accepted, automatically assigned to the Basic Membership type account.
How does the screening work?
First you can upload a picture only to the screening section. There it will be evaluated by the members and the crew. The members can vote to publish or reject the photo, every vote will be counted and we calculate an acceptance ratio.
The second part of the screening is done by the crew/moderators, they will examinate the votes of the members and have a closed discussion about the picture. Finally they will make the decision to either publish or reject the image.
How long does the screening process take?
There can't be a rule for that, it depends on many factors. First it depends on the amount of photos which are currently in screening, how much votes are coming by the members and also the discussion of the crew. A picture can get published within an hour if it's absolutely outstanding and stuning but also rejected if it's really bad. It's totally normal if a picture is in screening for some days, that does not have to be a bad sign.
What photos to upload?
There is only one rule for uploading, the photo has to be in any way belonging to the topic of decay or abandonment. It does not have to be a secret and crazy place, also official and legal places are welcome.
What kind of photos are not published?
These are only example reasons:
- poor technical quality
- lack of sharpeness or also have a huge amount of oversharpening
- very boring motifs
- poor compositions or perspectives
- poor editing
- disturbing elements like watermarks, logo or borders
What are good chances to get published?
These are only example reasons:
- extraordinary places
- special points of view, perspectives and compositions
- extraordinary light
- impressive mood
- pictures which are telling stories without words
- outstanding post processing
